LEDs are all the rage in lighting, but sometimes they don't work very well. The Boston Globe reported today that PBS station WGBH's "electronic mural" that entertains commuters on the Massachusetts Turnpike is being switched off until cooler weather in September. Apparently, the LEDs go dark when they get too warm. The mural displays photos of WGBH's TV shows and was turned on last November as part of the station's new $85 million headquarters.

My 8,500-word hydrogen fuel cell package has generated great responses about alternative modes of transportation. Jerry Schneider, a professor emeritus at the University of Washington, sent me a link to his Transportation Comparison Matrix. It lists many novel transit and transportation projects and technologies around the world as of mid-2006 (Jerry, time for and update?). My favorites is Airtrain, a winged-vehicle suspended on a "T rail" that promises to traverse rough terrain or even mountains. Its management poses it as a more cost effective solution to Maglev.

ITM Power plc, a U.K. company, has introduced a hydrogen home refueling electrolyser that promises to produce enough hydrogen overnight to take a duel fuel Ford Focus 25 miles. Eight years in development, the electrolyser uses a polymer membrane (also known as PEM which stands for both Polymer Electrolyte Membrane or Photon Exchange Membrane) intsead the more expensive platinum-plated membrane. Electrolysers and fuel cells traditionaly employ a platinum-plated membranes which are considered a cost impediment to wide adoption of hydrogen powered vehicles.
