Reusing Hard-to-Reuse Models

Here is an easy way to reuse surfaces and features from supplier's lower geometric resolution models on future designs

David Szostak -- Design News, December 5, 2005

There is a lot of talk about part and design reuse. For us, that also means reusing any aspect of a previous design, such as surfaces and features.

In a multi-CAD environment you're going to work with different geometric resolution models. This comes up when you outsource part of your design on a project to an outside supplier. During the project you are not concerned with lower geometric resolution models because the supplier is available to make changes to their design.

It is when you want to reuse a surface or feature from the supplier's design on a future project that the lower geometric resolution will have to be addressed.

In this cool software trick we'll show you how to leverage a surface on a supplier's lower geometric resolution part and reuse it during the design of a new model.

You need this trick if: You work in a multi-CAD environment and want to reuse surfaces and features from supplier's lower geometric resolution models.

Light Matters: Systems Level Approach to HBLED illumination applications
Its good practice to apply a systems-level approach to high-brightness LED (HBLED) illumination applications. Minimally, the system includes the optical, thermal and electrical characteristics of the of the HBLED, the lens (if any) which is built-in to its package, secondary optics such as external plastic lenses/reflectors to direct the light as your application requires and power driver electronics.
