ICs provide specialized hardware and software solutions for motion control

By Design News Staff -- Design News, October 23, 2006

In the motion control IC market, a combination of speed, enhanced hardware and specialized software is adding up to a greater focus on motion itself. From microcontrollers to powerful DSPs, hardware additions such as PWM outputs, quadrature inputs and other hardware resources are designed to assist the developer. And along with hardware, the trend is toward more and better software libraries, so engineers have less to do on their own to create different types of motion. Other companies are taking DSPs, writing code and creating chip sets to do time-critical functions and provide solutions on silicon. Those solutions are using better algorithms, providing multi-axis control and adding features that benefit specific applications.

MOTION IC INCREASES PERFORMANCE AT HIGH VELOCITY

The MC73110 Motor Control IC from Performance Motion Devices Inc. offers Field Oriented Control (FOC) for brushless dc motors. This single-axis IC increases motor efficiency and delivers a wide range of usable motor speeds along with numerous monitoring and control features. Only a MOSFET or IGBT three-phase bridge is needed to implement a full-featured drive. Field-oriented control provides greater motor efficiency and higher top-end rotation speed. This capability is an improvement over standard Hall-based approaches and gives a speed advantage over sinusoidal commutation in brushless dc motor systems. It also offers a significant improvement over standard variable speed drive techniques. Get more information on Performance Motion Devices' Field Oriented Control.

HIGH-VOLTAGE INTEGRATEDCIRCUITS

A new series of next-generation 500 and 600V high-voltage integrated circuits (HVIC) is available from International Rectifier. These 19 HVICs, half-bridge and high- and low-side drivers address applications including motor control, lighting, switch-mode power supplies, audio and flat-panel displays. They offer single or dual inputs, under-voltage lockout protection, fixed or programmable dead time for half-bridge drivers and drive currents up to 2.5A. The ICs utilize a high-voltage IC process known as G5 HVIC which enables high-voltage level-shifting and termination technology that delivers superior electrical over-stress protection and higher field reliability. Advanced packaging equipment and materials, combined with advancements in mold-compound injection techniques, allow these devices to be less sensitive to moisture and provide improvements in the plastic-to-die interface. TEXAS INSTRUMENT'S 32-BIT DIGITAL SIGNAL CONTROLLERS

TMS320C2000™ digital signal controllers from Texas Instruments provide a combination of MCU integration, ease-of-use with the performance and cost benefits of DSP technology. The TMS320F28015 and F28016 controllers offer 60 MHz of performance starting as low as $3.25. The C280xx series integrate control capabilities including PWM generation, time stamping, sensor capture, analog-to-digital conversion, communication interfaces and program and data storage in a single device. TI is offering a digital power development kit, which consists of a TMS320C2000™ digital power supply software library and a series of hardware modules from Tier Electronics that provide off-the-shelf platforms that engineers can control with the library. Light Matters: Systems Level Approach to HBLED illumination applications
Its good practice to apply a systems-level approach to high-brightness LED (HBLED) illumination applications. Minimally, the system includes the optical, thermal and electrical characteristics of the of the HBLED, the lens (if any) which is built-in to its package, secondary optics such as external plastic lenses/reflectors to direct the light as your application requires and power driver electronics.
