Welcome to the College of Engineering at Georgia Tech. Throughout the ages, engineers have found creative solutions to the challenges that face society, from the Roman aqueducts to the use of electric power, and from the telegraph to microwave signals from outer space. Engineers are essential to our lives — they help design and create everything from cars to computer chips. In the College of Engineering at Georgia Tech, we are helping educate a new generation of engineers who will continue to use their education to improve people's lives and this will result in knowledge that will benefit our global community -
Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing Institute
The RPMI started in 1995 with a small group of faculty, industry and government representatives sharing ideas for addressing specific needs in manufacturing education. From that exchange, constituents made dollar and time commitments to the creation and growth of the RPMI. In our founding charter, we set down clear objectives and important guidelines for our operations and have remained true to those principles as we’ve grown. From the solid foundation we have established, the RPMI is making tremendous progress in leading the way into RP&M's future. Important changes are occurring within the RPMI and in the broader RP&M industry. In this report, we describe our accomplishments over the past year, and report on our plans for the future in light of these changes

Rapid Prototyping at Michigan State
Rapid Prototyping (RP) is the ability to generate three-dimensional models that need no machining or tooling. RP adds material layer by layer until the desired shape is achieved, instead of cutting away material by machining. RP allows for more flexibility than machining because the complexity of the model does not give any limitations to its production. RP generates 3D models quickly and accurately which can greatly reduce the research and development phase of product development, which can yield a lower cost to market. -

Rapid Prototyping at the Learning Factory
Rapid Prototyping (RP) refers to a class of technologies that can automatically construct physical models from Computer-Aided Design (CAD) files. RP machines are essentially "three dimensional printers", that allow designers to quickly create tangible prototypes of their designs. Such models have numerous uses. They make excellent visual aids for communicating design concepts with co-workers or customers. In addition, prototypes can be used for ergonomic or functional testing. For example, an aerospace engineer might create a scale model of an airfoil and use it to measure lift and drag forces in a wind tunnel, or a cell phone manufacturer might use a RP model to generate customer feedback on the look and feel of the next generation of handset
